Book Report – June 2018

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory – I had no idea that this book was actually a bestseller, or a movie. I don’t do this whole pop culture thing. Anyway, it’s a historical novel about 16th century England, focusing on the family of Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII’s second wife). If you like romantic, dangerous, period novels, this one is for you! It’s told through Anne’s sister Mary; Mary, Anne, and their brother George are pawns in their powerful family’s game of power and deception at court. There is no room for doubt or love, but Mary has a powerful will.

How It All Began by Penelope Lively – A really fascinating study of a local butterfly effect, How It All Began starts with the mugging of an old woman named Charlotte. Soon, the effects spiderweb across connections, to people who have never heard of Charlotte. A good study of human nature and the ways we affect other’s lives.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – If your literary tastes tend more towards the fantasy genre, this is a fabulous series. I have only read the first one so far, but I enjoyed it immensely. It has assassins, royalty, action, competition, secrets, and magic. It also has a fabulously strong female lead, and several wonderful female characters. I really recommend this to anyone looking to start a new series!
